ALL YOU NEED FOR SOCIALLY DISTANCED HIKING.

In these crazy times of self-quarantine and social distancing, hiking is more of a necessity than ever before, for the sake of our bodies, our minds, and our souls. Even in states with the most restrictive shelter-in-place edicts, hiking is still very much permitted, and even encouraged. Experts have weighed in and stated that the transmission of COVID-19 is very unlikely when hikers maintain the requisite distance between themselves and fellow hikers.

We are in this together, however, and need to work communally to flatten the curve and end this pandemic. Hiking is not an opportunity to be lax on social distancing. It’s time to think beyond crowded national and state parks and find the trail less traveled. Last week, for instance, I found three little-known Oregon trails on which I saw a total of three other people.

Hikes that are off the beaten path require a little more preparation, and a little more awareness, than your pre-COVID hike at Multnomah Falls, Vernal Falls, or Watkins Glen. I’ve compiled a list for everything you need to be ready for your COVID-free adventure. My favorite backpack, guidebook, water filter, hand sanitizer, and more. There’s even a tape measure to make sure you’re keeping your distance.
